Portugal is The Country With The Highest Growth in Tourism in The EU

According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) report, tourism grew by 8.1% in 2018, obtaining the highest rate among European Union (EU) countries and also one of the highest among all European countries. According to the printed edition of Jornal de Negócios, last year the estimated direct impact on the Portuguese economy was 14.3 million euros and the projection is that this year reach 15 million euros.

These figures include the direct, indirect and induced impacts that the sector has on the Portuguese economy. In the case of indirect impacts, the investments made in the sector are included, such as the purchase of airplanes. The induced impacts refer to the expenses of the workers connected to the sector.

The impact of tourism in Portugal can also be evaluated by the number of jobs in the area. Currently, there are 1.05 million workers, a figure that represents 21.8% of the country. Regarding the economy, the total estimated contribution of tourist activities was 19.1%.
