Portugal Chosen as Europe’s Leading Destination for the Second Time
Portugal was voted Europe’s leading destination for the second year in a row at the World Travel Awards.
The awards ceremony took place on 30th June in Athens, Greece. Also last year’s winner, this year Portugal competed against countries such as Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey.
Portugal received many awards. Madeira was chosen as Europe’s Leading Island Destination and Lisbon was voted Europe’s Leading City Destination and Europe’s Leading Cruise Port. Turismo de Portugal has once again been recognized as Europe’s Leading Tourist Board.
In the opinion of Ana Mendes Godinho, Secretary of State for Tourism, “receiving the ‘Oscar’ for Best European Destination for the second consecutive year is something that fills us with pride and proves that Portugal remains at the top of international tourist preferences. These results show that our strategy is clearly bearing fruit and that the world looks at Portugal as an example, also motivating us to continue the work of qualifying our suppliers and destinations, extending tourism throughout the territory and all year round, making it increasingly sustainable.”
